I actually had a really hard time figuring out a pallette for this one. It's surprisingly daring, I think, for a student to chose such a flat and simple color scheme. And by daring, I don't mean that I'm some kind of genius with color or that I'm ahead of my peers. I just mean that the tendency is for students to push themselves to use more and more complex colors and rendering choices, to make it look like they really spent hours and hours on something.
I did spend hours on this. Mainly, I spent them meticulously re-coloring those fucking chimneys over and over and over again every time I wasn't satisfied with the colors I had chosen. Some of the roughs were too busy, others too simple, too close to the b&w ink, etc. It's hard to resist the temptation to overwork something, when what you're really supposed to be doing with a work like this is to let the ink speak for itself, reinforcing what it has to say with a few strong color choices.
I hope I did a good job.
(major props go to Guy Davis---this peice wouldn't exist unless I hadn't stumbled on Danse Macabre when I was a scared little 12 year old)
This is beautiful. I love how the colouring is so simple, yet the whole thing manages to be very textural . . . Those bits at the bottom look like they would feel like woodgrain should I reach through my computer screen to touch them. And there is something delicious about the way you have drawn the clothing, too.
Yey perspective! It lends a lot of movement to this piece.
